Rutherford House School Given the Green Light

The proposal to establish the Rutherford House School in Wandsworth has been approved by the Department for Education. Co-proposers, Place Group and Bellevue Education were given the go-ahead by DfE to proceed to the pre-opening phase on 13th July.

The Rutherford House School will be an inclusive, all-ability academy category school for pupils aged 4-11. Combining the very best education practice from both the maintained and independent sectors, the new school will have smaller class sizes of 28 and a focus on core learning in literacy, numeracy and ICT.

Place Group’s Managing Director Claire Delaney said “We believe passionately that every young person has the right to an excellent education and should have the opportunity to achieve their full potential, regardless of their background, in a stimulating and caring environment. We will work hard to ensure that the Rutherford House School provides this opportunity and becomes an important part of the local community when it opens in September 2013.”

With a current severe shortage of places in Wandsworth, the news of the Free School approval has been welcomed by the community and prospective parents in particular.

Mark Malley, CEO of Bellevue Education said “This is the news we all wanted to hear. The new school will not only address the issue of capacity but also contribute to raising education standards in the area as we develop an outstanding school that will combine the best characteristics of successful independent and maintained schools for the benefit of state school pupils.”

Rutherford House School is scheduled to open in September 2013 on the site of Balham Youth Court and will have 392 pupils when full.
